| | I don't know why this presidential election should mean so much to me. But for some reason I am very emotionally attached. I have become more involved in listening and taking civil action by writing letters and going to local meetings than I ever have before. The things that are important to me are very real. I live by a creek, and have well water. I want that to be drinkable and clean for myself and my neighbors. I love to hike in the woods along long stretches of unbroken tail. I'm in the wilderness and connected with something ancient and mysterious. Then I stubble into an area where a road tears up the ground and all the trees have been taken down. It breaks my heart, and I'm reminded that people do not respect the forest like I do. The trees do not have a voice to protect them, and so I must become that voice. I believe that human actions are leading to serious environmental change including the warming of the planet. I believe that our resources are not endless and we need to be responsible with how we use them. This means knowing where and how things are made. Plastic is a petroleum product as well as gasoline. The trash is not biodegradable. We need to use less. Spring water is sucked out of the mountains destroying the ground water for many miles around. I do not buy spring water, it's irresponsible. This election will change things. I think that Obama will at least consider the evironment important. McCain's choice for veep, Palin has a disgusting environmental record. And if the republicans are elected I'm afraid that it will be the death of all the beautiful things that I love. Clean water, unbroken forests, opportunities for clean energy, and maybe even the polar bears.
